Lye Wood Floor Finish

Woca wood lye is for priming unfinished or freshly sanded interior woodwork.

Start applying lengthwise an even coat of lye using a nylon paint brush. Probably this will be a white oil either master oil white which has 5 pigment mix or extra white 118 which has 13 mix. After the floors are sanded if they are to be lightened they are treated with a wood lye solution. Stage 1 involves soaking the wood with wood lye then after an hour washing off the excess.

After extensive sanding the floors are bleached with lye which takes out the natural yellow and generally creates a raw whitewashed effect. Apply at least one liter of lye for every 100 sq ft.

The floors can then be finished with a white oil or natural soap. Ensure that the woodwork is freshly sanded dry and free from dust before applying the lye. Rinse tools in clean water.

When the wood is dry remove any visible lime pigments from the surface. The wood must be allowed to dry overnight. Apply the lye undiluted with a brush or paint roller in an even coat on the floor following the wood grain. Basically it acts as a bleach and it also stops the wood yellowing in the future.

Apply 1 liter to approx. Shake the bottle well. The lye is normally applied after sanding the floor fully quite often the floor is left a little rougher than usual so more of the white oil or stain is left in the wood at the later stage it is left to work and is then mopped up or extracted after whatever time is prescribed by the manufacturer. Hardwood enthusiasts accustomed to urethane finishes often express concern that a natural oil finish may leave wood vulnerable to greater wear and tear.

While it is true that with a penetrating finish wear does occur directly to the wood modern oil finishes are much more resistant to wear than those originally used to condition hardwood.
